Past Open champions from the Ping Rapture V2 Irons Set 1940s to the present day will compete in a special millennium challenge in teams of three or four as a curtain raiser to this year’s Open at St Andrews. Winners from six decades will be matched for four holes of best-ball play.

First to Golf Wholesale Store confirm his entry was 88-year-old Sam Snead, who won at St Andrews in the first post-war championship in 1946, and it is hoped that he will be joined by at least 21 other champions from the 27 who are still living. The venerable list includes great players from the last 60 years of championship golf.

All those taking part will be presented with a silver plate by the R&A and a scroll awarding them the freedom of the Old Course by St Andrews Links Trust.
